You may have a need to connect to the internet when using the HoloLens Emulator, such as when testing the code created in the Holograms 240: Sharing holograms tutorial.

In most cases your Emulator will connect to the internet automatically, however when connecting to certain routers the following steps are required.

image

Create or open a HoloLens project in Visual Studio. You can use the project in this tutorial: HoloLens Hello World!.

Set it to Release, x86, and select the HoloLens Emulator.

image

Select Debug, then Start Without Debugging.

image

The HoloLens Emulator will start.

If you have never used the HoloLens Emulator before, read Using the HoloLens emulator and Advanced emulator input for directions on how you use the mouse to move the gaze target to what you want to select, then selecting it, (rather than trying to simply click on something by pointing to it with the mouse, which doesn’t work).

 image

After the Visual Studio application loads, press the imageWindows key twice. First exit the application, then to show the main menu (pressing the Windows key emulates the Bloom gesture in the HoloLens).

Select the Microsoft Edge web browser.

image

You may see that it cannot connect to the internet.

Note: In most cases your Emulator will connect to the internet automatically, however when connecting to certain routers the following steps are required.

image

You can use windows search to find and open the Hyper-V Manager.

image

When it opens, select Virtual Switch Manager…

image

Select External, then click the Create Virtual Switch button.

image

Give the switch a name, select External network, then select a physical network adapter, on your computer, that is connected to the internet.

Ensure that Allow management operating system to share this network adapter is selected.

Click the OK button.

image

After the switch is created, right-click on the running HoloLens Emulator and select Settings…

image

Click on the Emulator NAT Network Adapter.

Select the switch you just created as the Virtual switch.

Click OK.

image

When you return to the HoloLens Emulator (and click the refresh button on the Microsoft Edge web browser), you will see that it will now connect to the Internet.

Hi,

But in my case the Network settings are resetet every time after restarting the debugger via VisualStudio. Do you know any solution for this problem?

Best Regards
